Help answer the question about football helmet

How do you recondition the outside of a football helmet?
Our youth football league is using helmets that are stained and dirty looking. How do I get the outside of the helmet looking good again? I have tried various household cleaners but they still look dirty. Would it be better to repaint it? If so, what kinds of paint do I need to get?

In all honesty, probably not. Troy Aikman, when he played with the Cowboys, had a bad complexion where the helmet rested on his forehead. So did I, and I played at Nebraska and in the CFL for years. I believe that it really depends on the individual and skin oil levels. Just make sure you wash regular and maybe try a clearasil-type lotion. That seemed to minimize my acne.
    Good Luck!

ebay has signed mini helmets with bidding at $9.99 to 32.99. an athentic would carry quite a bit more of a price. right now on ebay I would venture a guess at around the $200. to $250.00 mark.

ebay prices are very depressed right now

Put them in a tub of soapy water and soak for a while Then rinse them the same way with fabric softener in the water and dry out on the porch on the end of a broom stick.

I had the same problem when I played except it wasn't because of the bars. I played Nose Guard and we had a shortage of helmets so I was stuck with the one I had. It was a little too tight on my head and I would always get light headed and dizzy. I eventually got used to it though, just have someone throw to you like your dad or something to get used to it. You'll be fine.

the best helmets are the Xenith X1, Schutt Ion 4D, and Riddell Revo Speed. The Xenith is supposed to have really good protection because it uses shock absorbers instead of foam. The Ion 4D has a combination of foam and a shock absorber design (i have that helmet, its really comfortable). The Revo Speed has similar padding. Bottom line is though, no helmet can prevent brain damage, so don't waste your money on something you don't need

I played in the 70's in the long hair days, we usually went the head band route. That protected the forehead and wiched the sweat. It was great for two a days, when the coaches ran us til we puked.

Lucky for you, short hair is not the embarrassment it was during that era. Short hair in the 70's meant no girls. Personally, I would cut it nowadays, at least during the season.

    You don't.

You send them to a company that specializes in reconditioning helmets so they can inspect them for cracks and other breakdowns in the integrity of the helmet. They need this treatment every couple of years because the repeated blows they take weaken the helmet, it's not a design flaw, it's the way they are designed. The helmet absorbs the damage so the skull doesn't.

I appreciate you're trying to save the league money, but do not mess with safety equipment and leave that to the pros. No amount of money being saved is worth the little guys getting concussions.
